Wednesday Real Stories – Christmas Eve Special - The Christmas I Chose Happy
The Christmas I Chose Happy
Christmas can be magical.
It can also be painfully loud, lonely, emotional, and heavy with expectation.
In this very special Christmas Eve episode, Heather shares a quiet, honest story about the Christmas she spent completely on her own — and why it became one of the most meaningful Christmases of her life.
This isn’t a story about pretending loneliness doesn’t hurt.
It’s a story about choice.
Heather explores how consciously choosing peace over pressure, presence over performance, and self-kindness over “shoulds” transformed a day that could have felt empty into a genuine gift.
Through simple, sensory moments — long baths, dogs, books, favourite films, unplugging from the world — this episode gently challenges the belief that being alone at Christmas is something to be feared or fixed.
Whether you’re spending Christmas on your own, surrounded by people, or somewhere in between, this episode offers permission to slow down, soften, and choose what truly feels nourishing.
✨ In this episode, you’ll hear about:
- Why loneliness doesn’t automatically mean sadness
- How choice can transform even the most emotionally loaded days
- Letting go of Christmas pressure, expectation, and comparison
- Creating peace without needing anyone else to change
- Why choosing happy is often quiet, intentional, and deeply personal
Chapters:
- 00:19 - A Real Christmas Story

- 02:26 - Finding Peace in Solitude
- 03:15 - Rewriting the Narrative of Christmas

🎧 A gentle Christmas Eve invitation:
Choose one thing tomorrow purely because it feels good in your body.
Not because you should.
Not because it’s tradition.
Just because it’s kind.
Sometimes, that single choice changes everything.
💛 This episode is for:
- Anyone spending Christmas alone
- Anyone feeling lonely in a room full of people
- Anyone craving permission to make Christmas simpler, softer, and more peaceful

It's Christmas Eve.
Speaker A:And I know for some of you, that sentence alone brings a lump to your throat.
Speaker A:Because Christmas has a funny way of amplifying things.
Speaker A:Love, yes, but also loneliness, expectation, memory, grief and pressure.
Speaker A:So today I want to tell you a real story, not a shiny one, a quiet one.
Speaker A:About the Christmas I spent completely on my own and why it turned out to be one of the best Christmases of my life.
Speaker A:So stay tuned for today's Christmas Choosing Happy podcast.
Speaker A:There was a year when I knew, I properly knew, that I'd be alone at Christmas.
Speaker A:No last minute invites, no pretending it didn't matter.
Speaker A:No, it's fine.
Speaker A:I'll just see what happens.
Speaker A:It was just me.
Speaker A:And instead of spiraling into the usual soundtrack of this shouldn't be happening, poor me, what am I gonna do?
Speaker A:Everyone else is having a magical time.
Speaker A:I made a different choice.
Speaker A:I decided if I'm going to be on my own, then I'm going to make this day bloody beautiful.
Speaker A:Not productive, not impressive, just nourishing.
Speaker A:So I planned it intentionally.
Speaker A:Long, hot baths where time didn't exist.
Speaker A:And I just let go.
Speaker A:Meditation, stretching, proper breathing, a book I'd been saving for one day.
Speaker A:Food I genuinely loved.
Speaker A:Not festive for the sake of it, just perfect for me and how I was feeling.
Speaker A:A few chocolates, a good glass of wine.
Speaker A:I walked my dog slowly, really slowly.
Speaker A:No rushing back for anything.
Speaker A:Taking the time to take in my surroundings.
Speaker A:I watched my favourite films, put on Christmas music early, gone to my PJs far earlier than socially acceptable.
Speaker A:And I opened my presents.
Speaker A:I toasted my family and friends quietly and with love.
Speaker A:And I spoke to people briefly.
Speaker A:And then I unplugged.
Speaker A:Phone off.
Speaker A:World off.
Speaker A:Pressure gone.
Speaker A:And I just basked.
Speaker A:Not in happiness as performance, but in peace.
Speaker A:That was the Christmas I realized something vital.
Speaker A:Lonely doesn't have to mean lacking.
Speaker A:Being alone doesn't automatically mean being sad.
Speaker A:Sometimes it means being free.
Speaker A:Free from expectation, free from obligation, Free from the exhausting emotional labor that Christmas can bring.
Speaker A:Trying to please everyone.
Speaker A:And that day became a gift.
Speaker A:Not because it was perfect, but because it was chosen.
Speaker A:We're taught quite relentlessly that Christmas alone is a failure.
Speaker A:That if you're not surrounded by people, noise, tradition or chaos, then something's gone wrong.
Speaker A:But that's just another story.
Speaker A:Story we've inherited.
Speaker A:And stories can be rewritten.
Speaker A:You can choose to make Christmas smaller, softer, kinder.
Speaker A:You can make it a day of rest rather than performance.
Speaker A:Presence rather than proving connection with yourself rather than comparison with others.
Speaker A:And yes, this is for those of you who are alone, but it's also for those of you who aren't, because you can feel desperately lonely in a full room as well.
Speaker A:So here's my gentle Christmas Eve invitation to you wherever you are tomorrow, with people, without people, somewhere in between.
Speaker A:Choose one thing purely because it feels good in your body.
Speaker A:Not because you should.
Speaker A:Not because it's a tradition, not because it keeps the peace.
Speaker A:One thing that says this moment is mine.
Speaker A:A walk.
Speaker A:A bath.
Speaker A:Silence.
Speaker A:Music.
Speaker A:An early night.
Speaker A:A boundary.
Speaker A:That choice alone can change the entire day.
Speaker A:To those of you on your own this Christmas, you're not broken behind or forgotten.
Speaker A:And to those of you surrounded by others, I hope you find moments of true rest inside it all.
Speaker A:And may this Christmas bring you peace where you need it, love where it matters, and the reminder that happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's something you can choose, moment by moment, from my heart to yours.
Speaker A:Have a very Merry Christmas and as always, keep Choosing Happy thank you so much for taking the time to listen to this week's episode.
