Speaker A:

Hello, and welcome to the Choosing Happy Podcast.

Speaker A:

I'm Heather Masters, and this week we're talking about community and the power of connection and how that can really enhance your happiness in the world.

Speaker A:

It's probably quite well known that isolation isn't really good for us humans.

Speaker A:

It's connection that makes a difference.

Speaker A:

And taking the time to build relationships, to reach out to others is so important, not just for our mental health, but for our physical health as well.

Speaker A:

So stay tuned for all the tips and tricks around community building for yourself in this week's Choosing Happy Podcast, foreign listeners, and welcome back to the Choosing Happy Podcast.

Speaker A:

I'm Heather Masters, and I'm guiding you today on a journey to a more joyful, connected, and meaningful life.

Speaker A:

And if you're new here, thank you for joining me.

Speaker A:

I do appreciate my listeners, and if you're a regular listener, welcome back.

Speaker A:

Welcome home.

Speaker A:

Today we're diving into a topic that's close to my heart and I think essential for our times.

Speaker A:

Building a community of happiness.

Speaker A:

The power of connection.

Speaker A:

Coming together in a world that feels like it's splitting apart.

Speaker A:

So grab your favorite drink, settle in, and let's explore how we can create more joy, connection, and belonging together, even when the world feels like it's becoming more divided.

Speaker A:

Let's start by looking at why community matters for happiness.

Speaker A:

I mentioned it in the introduction.

Speaker A:

I'll tell you a secret.

Speaker A:

It's not just about feeling good.

Speaker A:

It is about thriving.

Speaker A:

Decades of research, including that famous Harvard study on adult development, show that strong relationships of a single biggest predictor of happiness and longevity.

Speaker A:

Not money, not fame.

Speaker A:

It's connection.

Speaker A:

When we share our lives, our joys, our stories, and even our struggles, we create a sense of belonging and purpose that is impossible to find alone.

Speaker A:

That companionship is everything.

Speaker A:

And here's a science bit.

Speaker A:

When we connect with others, our brains release feel good chemicals like dopamine and oxytocin.

Speaker A:

And that's why a simple smile from a friend or a heartfelt conversation can lift your whole day.

Speaker A:

But let's be honest, it's a bit challenging today.

Speaker A:

And building a community isn't always easy.

Speaker A:

But I do get a sense that when I speak to people, there's a huge wave of people who want to build new communities, who want to return to physical lives, away from the digital, away from the technological.

Speaker A:

And we live in a world that sometimes feels like it's pulling apart.

Speaker A:

You know, technology connects us, but it can also make us feel more isolated.

Speaker A:

And there's differences in opinions, differences in backgrounds, and differences in Beliefs that can create walls instead of bridges.

Speaker A:

And it's noticing those differences that actually causes a separation.

Speaker A:

If we focus much more on what we are like, then things would change completely.

Speaker A:

So how do we come together when the world feels so divided?

Speaker A:

The answer is intentionality.

Speaker A:

Building a community of happiness means reaching out, listening deeply, being compassionate, and creating spaces where everyone feels seen and valued.

Speaker A:

Let's take a look at some practical ways to build a community of happiness.

Speaker A:

Creating meaningful rituals.

Speaker A:

If you think about starting a weekly or monthly tradition, maybe it's a Sunday brunch or a monthly book club, or even a standing zoom coffee date with a friend.

Speaker A:

Rituals give us something to look forward to.

Speaker A:

They help create habits and they strengthen our bonds.

Speaker A:

We notice when that ritual is no longer there.

Speaker A:

It's much better if we can do something face to face.

Speaker A:

Even if you're on your own and you're making a date with yourself in a coffee shop where you know there'll be people milling around, that connection doesn't have to always be that one to one, but just the energy of having other people around can make a difference.

Speaker A:

Volunteer together.

Speaker A:

You know, find a cause you care about, invite others to join you, or find a volunteering group that not only helps others, but also brings people together around a shared purpose.

Speaker A:

You can also organize interest based gatherings.

Speaker A:

Start a group around something you love, like gardening, like a book club, like writing.

Speaker A:

That's my biggest connection.

Speaker A:

Hiking, cooking, or even board games.

Speaker A:

I mean, one of the things I'm looking at doing are creating AI dinners where we physically, physically get together in groups to discuss the future of AI and how we can use it for the betterment of humankind.

Speaker A:

Shared passions create natural opportunities for connection.

Speaker A:

And you can never know what comes out of a new network of people.

Speaker A:

Practice deep listening when you are with others.

Speaker A:

Put away your phone, put away all the tech, take your headphones out, put them away and be absolutely present.

Speaker A:

Just be listen.

Speaker A:

Not just to respond, but to truly understand, to really be present.

Speaker A:

To put aside your thoughts, to put aside your judgments and just be present.

Speaker A:

Listening and present.

Speaker A:

And this simple act can massively transform your relationships and build new relationships as well.

Speaker A:

You know, I'm always on about celebrating.

Speaker A:

So don't let achievements, big or small, go unnoticed.

Speaker A:

Celebrate together.

Speaker A:

It could be a promotion, a birthday, it could be grabbing a glass of wine on a Friday after a tough week.

Speaker A:

Whatever it is, it could even be celebration.

Speaker A:

Celebrating movie night, celebrating getting the lawn done between rain showers.

Speaker A:

Whatever it is, celebrate.

Speaker A:

Really build joy and happiness into your week in a way where you communicate and connect with others.

Speaker A:

Embrace diversity.

Speaker A:

Invite people from different backgrounds and different perspectives.

Speaker A:

The more diverse your community, the richer your experience will be.

Speaker A:

Be and allow others their opinion.

Speaker A:

Allow them to be who they are.

Speaker A:

That's the most important thing.

Speaker A:

Life would be really boring if we were all the same and we all had the same opinion.

Speaker A:

So allow others theirs.

Speaker A:

And if you've got any projects, collaborate on them.

Speaker A:

Find people who will work together to create something new or to solve a problem that you've identified.

Speaker A:

Collaboration not only builds unity and gives everyone a sense of ownership, the results tend to be 10x.

Speaker A:

So here's an exercise the Connection Challenge it's time for our little Choosing Happy challenge, and here's how it works.

Speaker A:

Think of someone you haven't connected with in a while.

Speaker A:

Could be a couple of months, it could be a couple of weeks, or it could be a couple of years.

Speaker A:

And reach out.

Speaker A:

It could be a quick text, a phone call, or even a handwritten note and share something positive with them.

Speaker A:

Maybe it's a memory, a compliment, or just a simple thinking of you.

Speaker A:

If you're feeling inspired, invite them to join you in one of the rituals or gatherings or something on the list we've just talked about and notice how you feel after reaching out.

Speaker A:

Often the simple act of connecting can brighten both your day and theirs.

Speaker A:

And speaking of community, I'd love for you to become an even bigger part of the Choosing Happy family.

Speaker A:

I'm launching an online group for AI, but also I'm considering launching an online group for Choosing Happy.

Speaker A:

I do have a space.

Speaker A:

I haven't really, really put time into it, but I'd love to connect more with listeners and hear your stories and let you suggest the topics.

Speaker A:

I'm considering hosting monthly virtual meetups and a little happy hour for happiness seekers.

Speaker A:

And if it's something that interests you, please do say so in the comments.

Speaker A:

Reach out and let me know.

Speaker A:

Finally, let's wrap up with a gentle reminder that building a community of happiness doesn't require grand gestures.

Speaker A:

It's about showing up, being present, and creating space for others to do the same.

Speaker A:

Start small, reach out, celebrate together, and above all, keep Choosing Happy together.
