2

the choosing happy podcast, where
3
:we explore the many ways to find
happiness, to cultivate happiness
4
:and wellbeing in our everyday lives.
5
:And more importantly, in our businesses
and our services and how we serve
6
:and how we show up in the world.
7
:I'm your host, Heather Masters, and
today we're diving into a simple yet
8
:transformative topic, the one thing
you can change right now to be happier.
9
:Before we get started, I want to thank
each and every one of you for tuning
10
:in, sharing your feedback and being
part of this incredible community.
11
:It really would help me if you
could like, share, comment, and
12
:if possible, leave a review.
13
:Your stories and experiences inspire
me and I hope that in some small way, I
14
:can return the favour by inspiring you.
15
:So let's jump right in.
16
:This week, we have this transformative
topic, the one thing you can
17
:change right now to be happier.
18
:So stay tuned for this week's
Choosing Happy podcast.
19
:/ Hello and welcome to the
Choosing Happy podcast.
20
:I'm Heather Masters.
21
:Happiness can often seem like an elusive
goal, a distant destination we're all
22
:striving to reach, but what have I told
you that a significant boost in your
23
:happiness could be achieved by making one.
24
:Simple.
25
:Just one simple change.
26
:It might sound too good to be true, but
bear with me while we go through this.
27
:The change I'm talking about is
shifting your focus again from what's
28
:wrong to what's right in your life.
29
:And I know a lot of
you struggle with that.
30
:I've really struggled.
31
:I'm getting so much better at it.
32
:And the answer is around creating
awareness and cultivating an attitude
33
:of gratitude or how I would describe it.
34
:I prefer to say the word is
an attitude of appreciation.
35
:Gratitude and appreciation
might sound like a cliche.
36
:It's something we hear about so often and
its profound impact easily be overlooked
37
:because we're kind of dismissing it
as something you've heard before.
38
:But the science behind
gratitude and appreciation and
39
:its effect on our happiness.
40
:is solid and compelling.
41
:Research consistently shows that
people who practice gratitude
42
:regularly experience greater
emotional well being, reduced stress
43
:and even improved physical health.
44
:And I wanted to cover a topic like
this right now because of everything
45
:that's going on in the world.
46
:I think we don't want to.
47
:Do you need a way of bringing our
focus back to what's truly important
48
:to us in this moment in our life?
49
:I really believe that we're
here to experience joy.
50
:And if we're not experiencing
joy, then the lesson, if you
51
:like, is how do you shift?
52
:How do you create that in your life,
even if you're going through hell?
53
:And I know a lot of us are struggling
with so much, with ill health, with
54
:financial challenges, whatever it is.
55
:I know we've all got our own
burdens at this moment in time.
56
:Never, probably never as strong as we have
at this moment on the planet globally.
57
:And it's about reaching for that
light, reaching for the thing that it's
58
:going to help us move through this.
59
:Move through it in a way that we
are experiencing as much joy as
60
:possible in our lives every day,
because you never know the minute.
61
:You never know what's going to happen.
62
:So, grasp the moment.
63
:Grasp the opportunity to create
joy, create appreciation.
64
:So how can you start incorporating
gratitude and appreciation
65
:into your daily routine?
66
:Let's look at a few simple yet powerful
practices you can begin right now.
67
:And I'll share what I've been doing
as well, because I've had a massive
68
:shift over the last few months.
69
:The first one is keep a gratitude journal.
70
:And this is one of the most popular
and effective ways to cultivate
71
:gratitude and appreciation.
72
:Each day, take a few moments to write down
three things that you're grateful for.
73
:And they don't even have to be.
74
:big things.
75
:I like to get a little bit deeper and
I write down something that I love.
76
:Even something as simple as a warm
cup of coffee, because for me, coffee
77
:is massive for me in the morning.
78
:It's really important to start my day.
79
:It could be a hot shower that
just wakes you up in the morning
80
:or a smile from a stranger.
81
:So, it's anything.
82
:What I like to do is think
about things I love as well.
83
:So, if I'm getting into a dark place, I'll
take a moment to think of three things.
84
:That I love, whether it's my son,
I get into the experience of the
85
:last time I was with him and seeing
his smile and feeling his hug and
86
:just appreciating his very being.
87
:And the key to all of this is consistency.
88
:One of the other things I do every day is
in my gratitude or appreciation journal.
89
:I actually take the time at the end
of the day to list down everything
90
:that I've appreciated about the day.
91
:What have been the wins?
92
:What have been the things that
have made a difference to me?
93
:What have I received
that I'm grateful for?
94
:Even if it's something small, Like, I
don't know, an email from a long lost
95
:friend who I've lost contact with.
96
:I'll write that down as a
received, something I appreciate
97
:that I've received that day.
98
:And I love doing that
just before I go to sleep.
99
:There is also studies around
appreciation before you go to sleep.
100
:It helps you sleep better.
101
:It puts you in that appreciative,
high frequency state so that you
102
:have a restful, beautiful sleep.
103
:And over time, you'll train your brain to
focus on positive aspects of your life.
104
:Which can lead to a significant
boost in your overall happiness.
105
:Number two is expressing
gratitude to others.
106
:Just taking the time to express your
appreciation to those around you.
107
:So, I often, again, with my son,
just drop him an email, drop him
108
:a direct message, just reminding
him how much I appreciate him.
109
:A simple thank you, a heartfelt message,
just a verbal acknowledgement can go
110
:a long way, especially in business.
111
:Just thanking them for their
contribution is really, really
112
:important and can go a long way.
113
:Not only does it make the other person
feel good, it reinforces your own sense
114
:of gratitude and connection and also
helps strengthen your relationships.
115
:And what's more important
than relationships?
116
:Number three.
117
:Mindful gratitude.
118
:And this is one that has
mercifully made a difference to me.
119
:So, incorporating gratitude into your
mindfulness or meditation practice.
120
:So, when you do your meditation
or mindfulness practice,
121
:Really sitting in that
energy of appreciation.
122
:So really feeling
appreciation in your body.
123
:What, you know, where in your body is it?
124
:How strong is it?
125
:Can you make it stronger?
126
:Reflecting on things that you're
thankful for, on times when you really
127
:felt immense gratitude for being alive.
128
:And allowing yourself to fully
experience the feeling, letting
129
:them wash over you, but also really
noticing, really connecting with
130
:where they are in your body as well.
131
:And this practice can help anchor you in
the present moment and shift your focus.
132
:Perspective towards positivity.
133
:And as I say, the real difference for
the mindfulness for me, though, that
134
:really shifted everything, noticing
where the feeling of appreciation
135
:was in my body, what it felt like,
what the images I associated with
136
:it, could I make them brighter?
137
:What was my.
138
:energy like when I really sat in
this moment of appreciation and being
139
:able to just let go and let it wash
over me and doing that on a regular
140
:basis and also visualizing that
appreciation flowing through my day.
141
:So visualizing my day and seeing it all go
really well and just being grateful, just
142
:appreciating that life is working for me.
143
:That everything happens is for me,
and it's a lesson, it's a learning and
144
:appreciating everything as it unfolds.
145
:That that was, that's
made a massive difference.
146
:It's been one of the biggest shifts
for me being able to really, not just
147
:think about appreciation, but absolutely
immerse myself in appreciation in
148
:a mindfulness and meditative way.
149
:I hope that's helping.
150
:So, let's talk about why
appreciation and gratitude work.
151
:At its core, gratitude shifts your focus
from what you lack to what you have.
152
:It's a powerful counterbalance
to the natural human tendency to
153
:dwell on negatives and positives.
154
:problems.
155
:When you actively practice appreciation,
you're training your brain to look
156
:for the good things to appreciate,
the small joys and blessings that
157
:might otherwise go unnoticed.
158
:Moreover, gratitude, as we said earlier,
can really improve your relationships.
159
:Because when you are in appreciation,
you're more likely to thank people,
160
:to express gratitude for them.
161
:And it fosters a sense of connection
and strengthens your bonds.
162
:You're more open with people.
163
:People feel valued and seen, and
that creates a positive feedback
164
:loop of kindness and generosity.
165
:And gratitude also
enhances your resilience.
166
:And this is really The reason for
this episode, because life is full of
167
:challenges and setbacks, never more
than at the moment, but a grateful
168
:and appreciative mindset helps you
navigate these difficulties with a
169
:greater sense of hope and optimism.
170
:It raises your vibration.
171
:It reminds you that even in tough times,
there are still things to be thankful
172
:for, and that can make all the difference.
173
:It can make the difference in what
we focus on and that, in terms of
174
:consciousness, can make a difference
to the planet, to humanity,
175
:to your life, to your future.
176
:Now, I know that starting a new habit can
be daunting, especially if you're feeling
177
:overwhelmed or stressed, but the beauty
of gratitude and appreciation is that it
178
:doesn't require a lot of time or effort.
179
:It's about small, consistent actions
that gradually shift your outlook
180
:and bring you more joy in life.
181
:My practice really began with using
headspace and just spending 10 minutes
182
:a day doing a meditation first thing
in the morning, doing my journaling,
183
:and as I say, 10 minutes on an evening
journaling about what I've appreciated
184
:throughout the day and what's gone well.
185
:what I've learnt and how it's
impacted me in a positive way.
186
:The final comments I'll make, um,
this is just a personal thing.
187
:Um, but I, I don't use, I think gratitude
and appreciation have a different energy.
188
:And I remember as a child being
told to be grateful for what I have.
189
:And that was said in such a
way that it kind of meant.
190
:That if I was wanting more, I should
just be grateful for what I have.
191
:So that, that's kind of a
limiting way, which is why I
192
:prefer the word appreciation.
193
:There is no limit to appreciation.
194
:There's no kind of cutoff.
195
:You know, there's no obligation
to feel appreciation.
196
:So that is why I prefer
the word appreciation.
197
:I do think it has a different
energy and that's just something to
198
:be aware of because I've noticed.
199
:If I feel gratitude for something, I have
found myself restricting myself because
200
:of that belief around wanting more.
201
:Gratitude is not a limitation.
202
:Appreciation is not a limitation.
203
:It's about enjoying what you have and
being open to receive so much more.
204
:Appreciation and gratitude, if put
into the right energy, if you're
205
:really visualizing and stepping
into the feeling of appreciation.
206
:It will attract more of the same to you.
207
:You attract those moments
that you are appreciating.
208
:So here's my challenge for you this week.
209
:Start a gratitude or rather
an appreciation practice for
210
:yourself, whether it's a journal
expressing thanks to someone.
211
:A few moments of mindful reflection,
appreciation at the end of the
212
:day of how the day has gone.
213
:Commit to incorporating appreciation
into your daily routine.
214
:And notice how it makes you
feel and pay attention to any
215
:changes in your mood and outlook.
216
:And one little tip is to, if you
do an appreciation journal in the
217
:morning, appreciate ahead of time
all the good things that are going
218
:to happen throughout the day.
219
:So watch how your day unfolds.
220
:And remember, happiness isn't
about having a perfect life.
221
:It's about appreciating the beauty,
nature and the blessings you already have.
222
:in your life and by focusing on
appreciation and gratitude, you're
223
:choosing to see the good, to acknowledge
the positives and to cultivate a
224
:mindset that embraces happiness.
225
:Thank you for joining me today
on the Choosing Happy podcast.
226
:It's episode 70, so I'm celebrating.

:appreciation and the love of life and
unlock a deeper sense of happiness.

230
:with someone who might benefit from a
little bit more happiness in their life.
231

232
:appreciative and keep choosing.
233
:Thank you so much for taking the time
